Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has little to give thanks for this holiday season — but he will get to dig into some Thanksgiving turkey.
The Mexican drug kingpin will pass the holiday back in his cell in the maximum security wing of Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he'll be able to chow down on a veritable feast, according a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson.
While Guzman doesn't celebrate the American holiday — which landed him back in solitary confinement for the next five days while his Brooklyn drug trafficking trial is on hiatus — the reputed leader of the Sinaloa Cartel is a fan of turkey, according to a source.
And though the menu provided by the federal Bureau of Prisons says he'll get a lunch including "turkey roast" and "turkey gravy," defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman joked the meal would be more akin to "Slop. With a single turkey feather" than the traditional feast being enjoyed by many Americans.
Guzman's lunchtime meal will also include sweet potato mash, vegetable stuffing, collard greens, corn, potato salad, cranberry sauce, green salad, and a slice of bread.
There's even a "pie dessert" — though it's part of a pared-down dinner menu of two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a fruit and a bag of potato chips.
The drug lord actually eats better when he's at the courthouse during trial days, according to sources familiar with his scheduled meals. He's served food from the Downtown Brooklyn courthouse's cafeteria, which, contrary to lore, is not a bologna sandwich, but a rotating protein, a starch and a scoop of vegetables.
In addition to turkey, the kingpin is also a fan of Chinese cuisines, said the source with knowledge of his eating habits.
The rest of Chapo's holiday will play per usual in the small maximum security wing known as 10 South — 23 hours in a cramped, windowless room, and a single hour of solitary recreation.
Lichtman says he plans to visit his client at least once over the holiday weekend for prep in his ongoing trial.
