A Brooklyn jury learned Monday that El Chapo has something in common with Spongebob Squarepants — a preference for tighty whities.
Prosecutors projected a close-up view of the accused drug lord's undies for the entire courtroom as they played video of what amounted to a 2012 panty raid on his manse in the ritzy resort town of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Joaquin Guzman, aka Chapo, was nowhere to be found, testified FBI Special Agent Jose Moreno, as the feds swept through the $1 million house of marble, which was chock full of weapons, ledgers, phones and piles of clothes and trash.
Cheeky footage taken during the search shows an agent's hand pawing through Chapo's underwear drawer, revealing a gold chain and size 30 tighty whities, the same no-nonsense undies favored by TV's favorite kooky sea sponge, Spongebob — who even sings a song, "My Tighty Whiteys," on the show.
Chapo's walk in-closet also contained at least a dozen pairs of size 30 Levi's jeans, as well as medium polo shirts from Banana Republic and Lacoste. Black baseball caps were littered around the closet and bedroom, where the agents focused on a pair of black Nike sneakers, size 9.
On cross-examination, defense lawyer Eduardo Balarezo tried to distance his client from the shoes, which were not entered into evidence.
"If [the shoes] don't fit Mr. Guzman, the jury has no way of knowing," Balarezo said to the agent — before borrowing an iconic line from late legal eagle and former O.J. Simpson lawyer Johnnie Cochran: "So if they don't fit … What?"
Moreno responded to giggles from the gallery, "Is this the O.J. trial or what?"Cochran used the same line — "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" — to distance Simpson from a glove found at the murder scene of his ex-wife and a pal.
Also in Guzman's closet were a pair of sky-high heels — and Moreno asserted that Guzman had been shacking up with another woman, Augustina Cabanillas Acosta, despite being married to former beauty queen Emma Coronel Aispuro.
The footage then pans into the bathroom, where piles of makeup and other toiletries crowd a filthy sink. A bottle of Calvin Klein's Eternity cologne is also visible.
The dark, slovenly bedroom also included an unmade bed with what appeared to be a sleeve of crackers and other snacks tucked into the sheets.
The exterior of the home is tidier and features a large pool, complete with slide.
Guzman has pleaded "not guilty" to a host of charges, including running a continuing criminal enterprise, murder conspiracy, and firearms charges.
