(WBRE/WYOU-TV) - It is day 18 of the partial government shutdown, and still no deal in sight to end it.
President Trump made his case for border wall funding in a prime-time address from the oval office later Tuesday night, but democrats insist, they will not fund the wall.
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz says there's one Mexican, in particular, he wants to foot the bill for President Trump's border wall.
"We should take the money criminally forfeited by El Chapo, the Mexican drug lord, and from any other drug lords, and use that money to pay for building a wall, to pay for securing the border" said Senator Cruz
Joaquin Guzman, known as "El Chapo", is on trial in New York. He is accused of international drug trafficking and conspiracy to murder…the justice department wants to put "El Chapo" behind bars for life—and wants $14-billion dollars in criminal penalties.
Cruz says his bill, the "El Chapo Act," would take that money and use it to pay for president trump's border wall.
"The shutdown will end, the government will fully reopen" noted Senator Cruz.
President Trump says he's willing to keep the government closed for months…even years…if congress won't fund his border wall, but Democrats say they're not paying for it.
Senator Cruz says this should be the solution that brings the parties together. He add that his bill wouldn't cost taxpayers a dime and he says right now it's the only deal on the table.
"I think it would be a brilliant solution and compromise, Trump gets his wall, the Mexicans —a Mexican is paying for it and we can move on," Gary Nordlinger of George Washington University said.
But Gary Nordlinger, a political science professor at the George Washington University says getting Democrats on board is going to be tough…
"No matter what trump wants to do he is going to get resistance from Democrats".
